چکیده

We explore the hypothesis that some high-velocity runaway stars attain their peculiar velocities in the course of exchange encounters between hard massive binaries and a very massive star (either an ordinary 50 − 100 M⊙ star or a more massive one, formed through runaway mergers of ordinary stars in the core of a young massive star cluster). In this process, one of the binary components becomes gravitationally bound to the very massive star, while the second one is ejected, sometimes with a high speed. We performed three-body scattering experiments and found that early B-type stars (the progenitors of the majority of neutron stars) can be ejected with velocities of & 200 − 400 km s (typical of pulsars), while 3 − 4 M⊙ stars can attain velocities of & 300 − 400 km s (typical of the bound population of halo late B-type stars). We also found that the ejected stars can occasionally attain velocities exceeding the Milky Ways’s escape velocity.

Runaway Stars, Hypervelocity Stars, and Radial Velocity Surveys

Runaway stars ejected from the Galactic disk populate the halo of the Milky Way. To predict the spatial and kinematic properties of runaways, we inject stars into a Galactic potential, compute their trajectories through the Galaxy, and derive simulated catalogs for comparison with observations. Runaways have a flattened spatial distribution, with higher velocity stars at Galactic latitudes less...

The characteristics of high velocity O and B stars which are ejected from supernovae in binary systems

We perform binary population synthesis calculations to study the origin and the characteristics of runaway O and B stars which are ejected by the supernova explosion of the companion star in a binary system. The number of OB runaways can be explained from supernova ejections only if: high mass stars are preferentially formed in binaries, the initial mass ratio distribution is strongly peaked to...

On the origin of the difference between the runaway velocities of the OB-supergiant X-ray Binaries and the Be/X-ray Binaries

The recent finding by Chevalier & Ilovaisky (1998) from Hipparcos observations that OB-supergiant X-ray binaries have relatively large runaway velocities (mean peculiar tangential velocity 〈vtr〉 = 42 ± 14 km s), whereas Be/X-ray binaries have low runaway velocities (〈vtr〉 = 15±6km s ), provides confirmation of the current models for the formation of these two types of systems. These predict a d...

Ejection velocities of high Galactic latitude runaway stars

We estimate the distribution of ejection velocities for the known population of high galactic latitude runaway stars. The initial sample is a collection of 174 early-type stars selected from the literature. The stars are first classified according to their evolutionary status in order to obtain a homogeneous sample of 96 genuine main sequence stars. Their present velocities and flight times are...

Do Not Support the Presence of Three High Velocity , Low - Mass Runaway Stars in the Core of the Orion Nebula Cluster

A recent article has employed the determination from groundbased images of high proper motions in the Orion Nebula Cluster to argue that JW 349, JW 355, and JW 451 are high velocity (38 km s, 89 km s, and 69 km s, respectively) low mass runaway stars. We report on measurement of the proper motions of these stars using images made by the Hubble Space Telescope’s WFPC2 imager and find that there ...
